Apud Hebraeos liber Iudith inter Agiografa legitur cuius auctoritas ad roboranda illa quae in contentione ueniunt minus idonea iudicatur Chaldeo tamen sermone conscriptus inter historias computatur Sed quia hunc librum sinodus nicena in numero Sanctarum Scripturarum legitur computasse adquieui postulationi uestrae immo exactioni et sepositis occupationibus quibus uehementer artabar huic unam lucubratiunculam dedi magis sensum e sensu quam ex uerbo uerbum transferens Multorum codicum uarietatem uitiosissimam amputaui sola ea quae intelligentia integra in uerbis chaldeis inuenire potui latinis expressi Accipite Iudith uiduam castitatis exemplum et triumphali laude perpetuis eam praeconiis declarate Hanc enim non solum feminis sed et uiris imitabilem dedit qui castitatis eius remunerator uirtutem talem tribuit ut inuictum omnibus hominibus uinceret et insuperabilem superaret.
Among the Hebrews the Book of Judith is collected among the Hagiographa: whose authority for confirming those which have come into contention is judged less appropriate. Nevertheless, having been written in Chaldean, it is counted among the histories. But because this book is found by the Council of Nicaea to have been counted in the number of the Sacred Scriptures, I have followed your request, rather your demand, and works having been set aside, from which I was forcibly detained, I have given one short night of work to this, translating more sense for sense than word for word. I have removed the very faulty variety of many books; I expressed in Latin only those words which I was able to find in Chaldean with understanding untouched.
Receive the widow Judith, an example of chastity, and publicly declare her triumphal honor with perpetual praises. For the Rewarder of her chastity, Who gave her such strength, has given this one as imitatable, not only for women but also for men, so that she conquered the one unconquered by all men, and surpassed the insurpassable.
