Text

This text is a provisional edition of the ninth-century Commentarius in Iudith by Hrabanus Maurus (c.780-856) around the year 830. The edition presented here seeks to represent the text of the Commentarius as it circulated in Anglo-Saxon England, based on a transcription of the sole surviving manuscript (which also contains Hrabanus' Commentarius in Hester) now known as Arras, Bibliothèque Municipale 764 (739), folios 1-93. This manuscript was most likely written in northern France (possibly St.-Bertin) at the end of the ninth century, and was possibly taken to Bath in 944 when King Edmund installed monks there from St.-Bertin.

In making this edition, I have also consulted two other representatives of the text: one of the earliest and most authoritative witnesses for the Commentarius, Geneva, Bibliothèque de Genève, lat. 22, a manuscript written around 830 at Reims; and the recent critical edition, Rabano Mauro, Commentario al libro di Giuditta, ed. Adele Simonetti, Millennio Medievale 73, Testi 19 (Florence: SISMEL, Edizioni del Galluzzo, 2008).
